Let me be the first here (to either show I've been paying attention or make a complete fool of myself).
Didn't Dillane do that on stage recently? Thanks for the info Nik!! E.xxx

Nik, you're a wonder. That's a terrific find. It's available on Amazon.co.uk for
pre-order.

I never thought I'd say this but I'm struggling too. Seeing Dillane recite it on stage from memory was one of the most awe inspiring events I'd
experienced in the theatre. I'm not ready to put it to the back of my mind yet.
But I cannot pass on hearing Ralph's reading of it, his beautiful voice. I'll buy the cd and save it until the time is right. D xx

Nik you do have your ear to the ground with all these RF related things you bring to the forum. THank you. I will check it out as I did not see Dillane perform
it...I understand how a wonderful experience may make it hard to listen to someone else recite the same material...but then...RF does have a rather nice voice.

Thanks Nik! I can't wait. Even though I didn't watch Stephen Dillane do 4Q, I still associate it with SD.

I am kind of jealus that you can hold such feelings and memories for so long, because I usually can't. It is a long way to September tho, isn't it?

Nik, you are as good as - what was it Clifton described herself as once? - a truffle pig!! You do find interesting stuff - thank you.

Nik - thank you - that's great news re 'Four Quartets' - it's so beautiful. But I have reservations going back further than the Dillane
'reading', & that's hearing the poet himself reading the work. Admittedly this was a recording, but his voice was unique, & I heard it late
one New Year's Night with special friends, so shall never forget it. I shall of course buy the CD &, like other forumers, keep it handy to play when I
feel the time is right.

Tonight and the next three nights BBC Radio 3 is broadcasting an essay by Craig Raine about "Four Quartets" with RF doing the readings. The schedule is here, but the links are not updated yet. (It's darn late - midnight here

Thanks a lot. I suppose one can listen to it on the internet? Even out of England?
Oh yes, one can - and it's online already!

I have gone to the link and clicked on it but something else comes up. World of the future and Jazz. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong? Binky

Hi Binky - no, the link is not producing tonight's The Essay programme, I reckon because it's not yet 11.00pm here in UK? I'm intending to listen
to each episode after the actual broadcast, on BBC iPlayer, but it won't be put into iPlayer immediately afterwards - at least that's what I've
found with other BBC radio programmes. You should be able to listen to the progr as it's actually broadcast at 11pm just by clicking on 'Listen
Live' on the BBC Homepage, but it might start slightly late because the live relay of the Proms Concert might be over-running. Good luck!

I missed this but will catch it on iPlayer. It's going to be interesting to hear the differences from Stephen's recital which is still so vivid.

I heard the first section last night. I liked the poet's comments--he related parts of Quartets back to Eliot's life, making those passages much less
difficult to understand. Is this an argument for the importance of knowing something about the writer's life?
I've heard RF read verse before, and I have to say, I don't always love the way he does it. I did like the bits I heard last night. I'd like to hear the entire piece now. |

Not an important question, but how come episode 3 seems to be available but episode 2 airs tonight?
E.xxx ETA: the link doesn't work... it shows "now playing: the secret places in the Four Quarters" but I am listening to something about WWII...

I never have luck when I try to listen to something like this on the computer. I will just wait for my copy to arrive in my post box. I had forgotten about it
but then got a message from Amazon UK that it was mailed to me August 27th
Feels like a gift at this point... |
