Tune in to the 2009 French Open
Shame I'm stuck in the office all day long, I'm going to miss watching tennis all day long while it's sunny outside, which is what I usually every year for the French Open!

Will Federer win this time? Will Nadal be the champion for the fifth time in a row? Will a French player make it to the final at last? Will Mauresmo make it to
the second week (oops, that's decided already, she lost her first game last night!)?
Tune in to the 2009 French Open Shame I'm stuck in the office all day long, I'm going to miss watching tennis all day long while it's sunny outside, which is what I usually every year for the French Open!

No one's following it? Drats.
It's cool because we have a lot of very good French player this year... the lad who beat Marat Safin, Josselin Ouanna, was quite impressive (even though the game he is playing just now looks quite hard on him...)

Lib, I'm hoping to see some of the tournament this weekend. It's hard here because of the time difference--the daily program ends just after I get
home.
Is Josselin Quanna new to the tour? I've not heard of him (although I admit I don't follow too closely these days).

I caught a little bit this weekend. We have the charming, delightful, charismatic Murray to cheer for ...

And Nadal is out! Who would have thought it?! Maybe Federer can finally win. None of the players left in the men's draw has won the tournament before. |

I can't believe Nadal has lost. Too bad for him (
I'd love to see Federer win it at last... but can't help thinking, wouldn't it be great to see Monfils, our last French player in the game, who is a lovely man, be a challenger? He just won to Andy Roddick and he played remarkably well. Ouanna is fairly new, he did lost that game on Friday but he's only jsut starting his career.

Hi Lib:
Just saw this thread. I've been following the FO by computer and watching recaps in the evening. The timing is such that in the States we can watch from 5am on. I've always liked that by 2pm our time, most of the results are in. It sounds like attending the FO was a yearly rite of Spring for you until recently. How fortunate you are to have it as your "local" tournament. It's similar to my situation in that the US Open is my local tourney. Nadal's dismissal by Soderling was unbelievable but in a way understandable as Rafa's played all the clay court events and had just gotten done with high altitute competition in Madrid. The man was tired. Soderling took Rafa to 5 sets in the round of 16 at Wimbly 2007. Yes, that was grass but Sod (no pun intended) does have a huge serve and he came to net often in this match. Nadal didn't look his usual pumped up self out there and many of his balls landed short and he was playing 5 feet behind the baseline. I'd not seen Ouanna before but what an all around game he has. Hard to believe he was an up and coming junior with Monfils who has so far been more successful on the pro tour. I feel badly for Mauresmo's first round loss. That had to be crushing for her but she has always had a hard time with the pressure at her own tournament. I'm going for Murray to win it all. Anybody but Federer for many different reasons. (not to do with his beautiful game)

I see that Monfils will play Federer. I'd like to see that, but won't be able to.
When I lived in CA, I went to the tournament in Indian Wells. That's a warm-up for the US Open, and because of that gets the top players. The first year I went, the tournament had not yet been so heavily promoted and the atmosphere was wonderfully informal, very casual. The players walked around the grounds without security or the inevitable entourage. I ran into Stefan Edberg that first year, literally ran into the poor man, and we had a nice laugh about it. A bit later I realized that he was Stefan Edberg. Oh well, all that was over the next year, when there was security everywhere, and a much more regimented atmosphere. |

I've never actually been to Roland Garros, Betuska, I usually watch it on telly. It's been a rite, since I've been a student, to go watch the
finals in a bar in Paris with my friends (I'm planning to go see it with the guy I fancy at the moment this year, if he's ok with it
This year, as I'm spending all day long at my desk, I go onto the FO website and watch the results live, but it just isn't the same. I'm quite happy when games last a little bit longer in the evening, as I can watch them when I come home from work! To me, the FO means so much more than just tennis: it's the summer starting!

Tv in a bar is good too, Lib. Good luck with the guy you fancy. It should help things if Gael Monfils ends up as one of the participants in the final.

Actually, I've got a better idea: I heard they set up a mini Roland Garros stadium outside the Paris city hall, I'm going tonight after work to see the
end of the Federer Monfils game with a friend. So I'll ask the guy I like if he'd fancy that on Sunday - provided the weather stays nice!
I'm quite torn between Federer and Monfils. I think I'll support whoever's winning

Do you know if this guy even likes tennis, Lib? Or is this a case of finding a nice way to spend a day with someone potentially very special? It's always
helpful if you can scream in unison at the tv/large outdoor screen for one or both players. It also helps if you both are wildly supportive of the same
player.
I can't watch matches involving Nadal in public unless I'm with like-minded folks. I make too much of a racket. Monfils or Federer. Hmm. I'm with you. May the better man that day win. |

We did talk about the French Open last time we had lunch together, and he seemed quite keen on the tournament, mentioned following the score from work the way
I do. Which is way I thought that might interest him... Not asked him yet though, I'm gonna phone him tonight to ask him if he'd fancy going out for
lunch tomorrow or Friday, and we'll talk about the tennis then.
Monfils Federer just starting, let's hope it'll be a long one so it's not over by the time I reach the City Hall...

At the rate things are going, the outcome of your Sunday date will be more important to me than the men's FO final.
I'm going with Soderling to win the whole thing. He has a potent weapon in his serve, covers the court well, and is not afraid to come to net. Question is if he will bow to pressure both playing Fed and in his first G Slam final. It'd be nice to see a swede win a grand slam. It's been a very long time and Bjorn Borg (already verified by press) will be in attendance. If Gonzalez beats Soderling in the SF's, he will not go on to win the tournament imo. If I'm wrong about Gonzo, I'll be thrilled. Thoughts on this Lib and tennis fans on the forum?

Thing is, I've not been able to watch as many matches as I usually do, so it's harder for me to guess who's going to win.
I'd like Fed to win, it would be fantastic to see him pocket his last Grand Slam trophee at last... And I like him as a player, he's a pleasure to watch. But Del Potro looks like a serious threat, he's been quite impressive throughout the tournament. And we know how Fed handles stress when it comes to RG... or maybe it was just Nadal, we'll see I think I detect a divergence here... I'm a Fed fan, and you don't seem to be. This where I need Sara to back me up And by the way, about the guy, we're having lunch today, so I'll ask him if he'd fancy going to see the finals with me on Sunday - fingers crossed!

I'd like to see Federer win, too, so that he'd have the career grand slam. Is he the last player in the draw who has been in a grand slam final?
That's important--it's hard to handle the pressure the first time. I haven't seen much of the tournament and don't know who's playing well
right now, although I did see Soderling. He's a good-looking player, although it remains to be seen if he has another big win in him. He's 24 I think,
and that's old for a tennis player to be making his name!@!

And we know how Fed handles stress when it comes to RG... or maybe it was just Nadal, we'll see
I would tend to agree, Lib. In one interview Roger gave, he did actually say that his problem was not Roland Garros but Nadal. Nadal gets under his skin to the point where it looks like Roger's giving up at the end of matches. (i.e. last year's RG). His Wimbledon loss to Nadal rocked his world last year and it threw him into a major "slump". Nadal knocked him off his pedestal. And yes, I do not like RF but my dislike for him has evolved over the years. And it has more to do with his personality traits than his tennis. Suffice it to say that the icing on the cake was at this year's Australian Open when he sobbed on court after having lost. I cried too, but my tears dried up when I thought about the larger picture - there's more to being a champion than just winning. This wasn't a retirement speech like Agassi's at the US Open, he wasn't crying from joy after having just won, and he hadn't just lost a coach to cancer like Pete Sampras when he lost it on court and that was at a US Open that he'd won. RF lost to the better player that day and it hurt like hell. But you hold it in and allow the other player to enjoy his victory. Compare that to Rafa losing to Roger at Wimbly 2007 for the second year in a row. He was demoralized but he held it together out on court. That's what one expects from a champion. The Australian tennis officials had no hankies to hand out to Fed. Rod Laver, out on court to help with the presentation, (could you imagine him crying after losing?) looked stunned. Heck, even Fed's girlfriend was stunned. It said alot about Roger the person. I could say more but won't. There is every reason to support him. I simply do not. But it doesn't diminuish my appreciation for his game. His tennis is breathtaking. Blue, I agree with you that nerves will play a role in the final but all players will be susceptible because Fed is going for a tournament he's never won and to get him closer to making tennis history. What I've noticed is that although he (Fed) has tightened up his game, he is still making alot of unforced errors and mentally he is not the same player he was when he dominated mens tennis. So there is a window of opportunity for the other three. Del Potro collapses mentally when he plays Federer. Gonzalez is a powerful player who can keep up with Fed physically but he's wild emotionally. Soderling really has the tools to win it all. And he backed up the biggest win of his career with a clobbering of Davydenko who is an established top tenner. It will be interesting. |

Betuska, I had no idea you were that much into tennis! It's great to be able to talk with you about it
I do see your point about Fed - and I respect it. To be honest, I do tend to turn the TV off once the match is over, I don't linger on to see the players reaction. (I do when i watch a RG finals, but this tournament is closer to my heart!). What does irritate me the most about tennis players is when they can't manage their anger and frustration and argue with the referee no ends or throw their racket on the ground. Marat Safin is a great (and very handsome!) tennisman, but he tends to irritate me because of that. I remember once his racket bouncing back into his head, and I was very satisfied. Stop throwing your toys around, you had it coming to you. Seems i'll have to watch the finals with my best friend after all - i'd completely blanked out that Sunday was Mother's Day in France, the guy I like has plans with his family. He's a good son, my best friend and I aren't good kids, apparently

Soderling is in the finals.
I followed the scores from my computer, I wish I could have seen it, it seems to have been quite a game! Now Federer - Del Potro.

I, too, have it on computer but Tennis Channel in US will repeat it later. I think and hope Soderling will come out victorious in the final against Fed.
(Fed in 4 sets against Delpo today?) Sorry Lib and Blue. I know you both like Federer but if Sod wins, it will be similar to when Gustavo Kuerten (another
favorite of mine from Brazil) won the French Open in 1997 ranked 66th in the world. And in FO 2000, Kuerten beat #2 seed Magnus Norman of Sweden for his
second title. BTW, Magnus Norman has been coaching Soderling since January. In an interview with the ATP yesterday, Norman said that he's worked mostly
on Soderling's mental outlook and if he gets to the final, he'll know what advice to give him.

Oh, I liked Kuerten! He played with such joy. Didn't he quit because of back problems?
Soderling-Federer will be a fun match to watch (assuming, of course, that Federer gets there). They'll be an interesting contrast in styles--Soderling being the more aggressive, power player, and Federer being so smooth. It's hard not to cheer for the underdog, but this is Federer's last best chance, I think. I won't be sorry to see either of them win. I just opened the NY Times website to see that Federer has indeed won. Ok, now we've got an interesting final to look forward to!
