Simon russell Beale as George Smiley |
Lead | |

Radio 4's Saturday Play has a series of radio dramatizations of John LeCarre's books featuring George Smiley. SRB is Smiley. I just listened online
to the first story, "Call for the Dead". I enjoyed it very much - particularly Smiley's "inner voice" being in the voice of his
ex-wife, Ann. You can listen online for the next 6 days at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00kgfch

I know - I missed it on Saturday but hope to catch it on iplayer. The rest of the cast looks very good too.
Edited to say Stephen's brother Richard Dillane is in it.

I'm not quite sure why the links aren't working, but if you go to BBC Radio 4, you'll find it under Programmes, Saturday Play. The article can be
found doing a search at TimesOnline for Simon Russell Beale. It is the article dated 23/0509. I thought the name Dillane sounded very familiar, Jas. I hope
you get a chance to listen to the play. It is very good!

I just listened to it on BBC iplayer Maggie (not available outside the UK); and the article I had already read in the newspaper. The play is indeed very good.
I don't know how he does it, but SRB is just so bloody brilliant in everything he ever does - he must get quite bored with his own ability.

Drat, I saw this advertised and forgot to listen to it. Sounds like it's worth making the effort on BBC iplayer.

It is, Doulla, it's a good story and very beautifully acted. As Maggie said, the device of having Smiley's ex-wife speak to his sub-conscious works
well.

Maggie, thanks for the heads up about the Smiley plays. This is terrific!

I went in and edited the link in that thread, you might see if it works now. The page says there are 2 more days to listen to it. It was showing an extra slash
in the URL I was seeing in the preview. I've also set up a tinyurl link: http://tinyurl.com/pwb96l.
I can't hear the program (here in the U.S.) as has been pointed out, it's a UK only program, apparently. But someone try the link and see if it works for you. I get the BBC player, but I hear live radio, not the drama. (The other) Maggie

Maggie, if you let the live radio run for a bit, the play starts. I listened to all of it yesterday. I think it's only video that we can't see here.
Simon Russell Beale has a lovely and expressive voice.

Yes, I noticed that, too. It was a full performance, and well thought-out for radio. And like Maggie, I liked the internal discussions with his ex-wife.
I'm looking forward to the next one.
It looks as if we may be getting closer to seeing BBC content internationally. The BBC is beginning discussions about putting its video content on YouTube.

Maggie, if you can't to the streaming from the Saturday Play site, try going to IPlayer Home and try it from there. I just listened to the second episode
from there after having trouble at the site. "The content seems to be unavailable. Try again later." That is so polite! SRB was great again and I
loved Jeffrey Palmer and Marcia Warren.

I've been a Jeffrey Palmer fan ever since he was in As Time Goes By with Judi Dench.

Wasn't that a great show?!?The first time I remember him was in Yes Prime Minister. He is just so great at understatement!

I haven't heard the second one yet - have to catch it on iplayer. I don't think Palmer was in Yes Minister or Yes Prime Minister btw - you might be
thinkng either of Paul Eddison or of Nigel Hawthorne (both of them both late and great).

Oh you're right about the Yes Minister - and I spelled his name wrong, too! I think I was thinking of Paul Eddington's character as having Palmer's
face - LOL! I mistook Eddington for Palmer again in my memory in The Good Life (another favorite) - I've just confirmed it in IMDB...sad how a mind
goes......But, I do remember Palmer from Reggie Perrin and he was great!

I had thought BBC 4 was going to air all 8 books in succession, but it appears we won't get George this coming Saturday

I agree, not quite as good as the first, but still very enjoyable. I love Marcia Warren.

This one was a straightforward mystery and George Smiley is wasted in a mystery. He's much too subtle for that.
Maggie, I was very sorry to hear that the plays are going to be spread out over a period of months because now I will never be able to keep up with them. Very annoying. |

Yes, this second play seemed more like Agatha Christie than I had expected.
{Edited to say that's not a bad thing....it's just different. Plus I think I became very thick headed about the music case and just who had it when, and missed out on a few why's in the process.} I have just listened to an interview with SRB on Front Row. Although the focus was primarily on Winter's Tale and Cherry Orchard, Smiley did come up. Apparently the series will resume in July - not too long of a wait!

Maggie, I think the next play is on July 5 (but I'm not positive). Maybe we could remind each other to keep an eye out for it? I'm very
absent-minded...
