Unbelievably busy at the moment and it's not something I want to knock off in a few seconds. I'll be in touch.

Switching topics a bit here...I am home early today waiting for the air conditioning repair man to show up. My unit is only 15 months old and seems to be
having a time of it in this 98F heat wave we have going on right now. The AC did not stop running all weekend...and the temps in my house were at 83F up until
about 11pm...then it dropped to a comfortable 77F...thankfully I have ceiling fans [a must in Florida] so I was able to be comfortable enough...but the
electric bill is going to kill me...
How the weather where the rest of you live? But back to the other topic...about taking care of our parents. I do not have to deal with that right now and I have a feeling that I won't have to...but I remember when my father was in the hospital and the VA wanted to send him home to live with me for rehab...I had to tell them that I could not do that. I lived 2 hours away from the VA hospital and worked a full time job and taught part time...But, to be honest, if my mom needed that kind of help I would do it. Sounds harsh...that different reaction but it was my mom that was around while I was growing up and she has always been there for me. |

Best Music Ever! I've been waiting over 10 years to see him!!
I went to see Goran Bregovic in concert in Los Angeles on Friday, 19 June, and I'm still over the moon. It was one of the top best concerts I've ever been to, up there with Leonard Cohen in terms of how amazing and moving it was! To see and hear Ederlezi, Kalashnikov, Mesecina, Caje Šukarije, In the Deathcar, Spij kochanie spij live was an amazing thrill. He had a horn section dressed as traditional Balkan gypsies, 2 Bulgarian women singers in traditional dress, a string quartet, and a six man chorus (in tuxes!). He sat in the middle wearing a white linen suit, and next to him was one sexy Serb, Alen Ademović, on percussion and vocals. It was in an older theatre on the UCLA campus, and it was very hard to remain seated while hearing the best dance music in the world. You can't not move. After a time, people started standing up and dancing, dancing while standing at their seats, down the aisles, up in the balcony. It was pure joy. After the show, there was a reception for the band in a lounge, but it was only for people who are donors to the UCLA performing arts programme. Obviously, I'm not one, especially since I don't live there (and it's a nightmare to get to LA, it should only take 2 hours, but I sat in unmoving traffic for another 2 full hours on the motorway, until I finally just had to get off and try finding my way on regular streets, when you see this in movies about life in LA, it's not an exaggeration!). But I managed to hook up with two young people, one of whom managed by the most distant possible name dropping connections to talk our way into the reception!! As a result I met and hugged Goran himself! My Romanian friend would be so jealous! I told him how long I'd been waiting to see him live, and how I came from San Diego to see him, so he hugged me. I was thinking, Wow, Goran hugged me for that! So I said, "Yes, and I sat in unmoving traffic on the motorway for 2 extra hours, and it made the journey even longer and more difficult. Hug me again!" Later he posed for a photograph with me. I'm ecstatic, and he looks rather shagged out. Also, I met and spoke with Alen Ademović at the reception. He's only 22, and he's an amazing musician and just lovely to look at, and he graciously posed for a photo. I showed the photo to hubby, "Me and my new sexy Serb boyfriend!" and he says we look like we could be related. Well, if I were a guy, I'd want to look like Alen. I'd want his talent, too! And his life of travel and music. Jasmine, Goran is going to be in London at the Barbican on 30 July, I know you would love it. Barbican info Tell Alen and Goran that I sent you, your friend Anastasia from San Diego who drove all the way to LA to see them, and talked to Alen about his C-vertebrae and his L-vertebrae. Yes, long story, not terribly interesting, but a point of reference!
Me and an underwhelmed Goran!
Me and the lovely Alen Ademović

Happens a lot lately (double post).
Reading your acount felt like I was there with you, too! I am sooo glad you had such a great time!! And thanks for posting the photos. You look very happy
indeed... how do you manage to look *that* good when so happy? I always end up looking like a total geek! "In the Death Car" is one of my favourites.
I really like Iggy Pop.

Oh, Nastia, I can't go on 30th. I would have loved to, but we have a party that day at work, which I kind of host, and can't miss. What a shame - it
sounds wonderful and I definitely would have gone.
Thank you for the lovely description. You really do look blissed out. |

Congratulations to that, Nastia.
I absolutely do not think that Goran looks underwhelmed, Nastia. Well, behind your lovely smile he may stand back a bit but only at first glance. Much better than a posed smile for me.

Eva226 wrote: That's funny you say that because I think I look rather terrible! I was telling hubby (who is still away) that I was so excited to meet Goran and also very happy to become briefly acquainted with Alen, but I felt I looked old and sweaty in the photos. Old because I'm, well, 40 now, and sweaty because I find myself hot quite often these days and bursting into sweats---which goes along with "old," I suppose. At least I don't have sweaty stains on my shirt! It was soooo thrilling to meet them, I couldn't believe how nice it was to have Goran hug me. Oh, Jas, that's such a shame you can't make it to the concert, I don't think he gets to London very much. I read somewhere on the internet a review of one of his Barbican concerts from many years ago, and the reviewer mentioned how there were barely any English people in attendance, the audience was mostly Serbo-Croatian and Eastern Europeans. I can think of no better people to spend an evening with! It was the same in LA. I sat next to a Romanian, and the theatre was full of people from similar parts of the world. They know how to dance and have a wonderful time. |

Oh Nastia, that was such fun to read. What an amazing evening. You look wonderful and so happy, thank you for sharing your photos.
I'm inspired to check out the concert at the Barbican as I shall be in London from 26 - 28 July so will see if I can stay a bit longer. I'm sure my mum and sister would love it. Will let you know how I get on. D xx

Doulla, yes! Please get your tickets right now and stay on in London for an amazing experience!
Jas, perhaps you can see him somewhere else in Europe on this tour, or some other tour in future, he seems to always have a show somewhere. You're quite the globe trotter! Or at least that's how I think of you. I can imagine you popping round to Madrid or Rome or Berlin for one of his shows. Hopefully! Paris 28 June (just around the corner!), Hamburg 3 July, Berlin 7 July. |

Nastia, you're the one who managed to go and see Goran! I am very envious of that now. Paris would have been very tempting, since I can get there easily by
train in 2 hrs 30. But I fear Paris on Sunday is not practical now
Edited to say: Clifton, is it a Schaubuehne production of The Wild Duck which you're seeing? If so, any of the usual suspects in it?

Shame - I would have offered you somewhere to stay I'm all alone in the office today, think I'm going to listen to some music on my phone... It's so nice outside, I wish I were sitting in a park with an ice-cream and a good friend to talk to!
