I did hear about his back because a friend of mine was seeing it last night and saw Bennett instead, whom he said was very good (I wouldn't feel sorry for
him - it's what all understudies dream of!) Apparently David was in agony on Friday and Saturday (he seemed all right on Wednesday when I saw it). But
it's press night tonight so presumably they were playing safe last night.

I do hope David is OK this evening and wish the whole cast well for press night.
Jas, what did you think of the production now it's transferred to the Novello? Did you notice any differences and how does it play on a conventional stage? D xx

I wasn't aware that you were seeing it several times in London as well, Jas!! Same question than Doulla, really: how does it transfer onto the Novello
stage?
I hope David's back is better now. Mainly for David's sake, as I wish him a very speedy recovery and doesn't like the idea of anyone being in pain (especially not David Tennant

Aw, he wasn't well enough after all. Here's the press release:
Hamlet Press Night: Official RSC Statement It has been confirmed that David Tennant will not perform at tonight's Press Night performance of the RSC production of Hamlet at the Novello Theatre in London due to a back injury. The RSC has decided to go ahead with the press performance with the understudy Edward Bennett in the title role. David did not perform at last night's preview and Bennett took on the role to a standing ovation from the audience. He normally plays the role of Laertes. RSC Artistic Director Michael Boyd said; "As an ensemble company we feel that it is important to go ahead with tonight's performance. While understanding that some people will be disappointed at not seeing David Tennant on stage, this production, like all our productions, is more than the sum of its parts - an ensemble of actors, designers, composers etc. and we should respect that by going ahead as planned." RSC Chief Associate Director Gregory Doran and director of the production said "David is gutted, not only at the thought of disappointing audiences, but also to be unable to perform a role that he has worked on and developed throughout 60 performances in Stratford-upon-Avon. Before this injury, he has only ever been off for one performance in his entire career to date, and is hoping that he will be able to return to the show as quickly as possible. It is an indication of the RSC's investment in understudies that Ed Bennett can take over from David in one of Shakespeare's largest roles at such short notice." D xx

Yes, someone in the cast said he was doing a spot of filming between Stratford and London, and he had a small accident and injured his back. So it was bad on
Wednesday too, though I didn't notice. I don't know how long he'll be out.
I'm seeing it twice in London, Lib - once with another friend and once with you. People keep asking me to go with them! I'm a bit Hamletted out now in all honesty, but I'll be happy to see it one more time with you. It's transferred fine, better than I would have expected. Not much difference really. I was a bit horrified by the enormous crowd that was gathering around the stage door on Wednesday as we left. Pretty scary actuallly. There were barricades but the crowd was huge.

I am so sorry for everybody. It looks like he will need surgery and won't be back until after Christmas. I wish him a speedy recovery.

"From The Times
December 11, 2008 Doctor's orders: David Tennant quits Hamlet role for back surgery Ben Hoyle, Arts Reporter and Patrick Foster For half the Doctor Who fans who queued overnight, crashed booking websites and jammed ticket hotlines to see David Tennant play Hamlet, it is sadly not to be. The RSC confirmed yesterday that the actor would not be returning to the Novello Theatre stage in the West End before Christmas. He has a prolapsed disc and will undergo surgery today. " So sorry, Lib. |

Yes, I know, i'm thinking of all the people who were looking forward to seeing it for the first time...
I'm glad I liked Edward Bennettt's performance in July, it'll be interesting to see him as Hamlet. Poor chap, having to fill in David Tennant's shoes when he knows most people in the crowd have come to see Tennant... And I'm fortunate enough to have other great things lined up for the week-end - catching up with you being top of the list! As for the surgeon, my uncle operated on both his parents, and he did fine, so I guess David's surgeon will deal with the pressure!! This said, I still am quite disappointed at the moment, I'm sure I'll be ok in a few days, have to take it in first Now, have to go back to the Palo Alto Mental Research Institute... when all I want is my bed!!!

I hope David's operation goes well today and that he recovers quickly. Do we have a little praying symbol?
Audrey, what can I say? I know exactly how you must be feeling right now. Let's just hope he gets better very very soon. D xx

Because of David's prolapsed disc (I don't want to say because of David, it wouldn't be fair to him, poor chap, he's most certainly gutted
himself!!), I was in a very grumpy mood today... Fortunately, I found a little group of people I feel more comfortable with (none of them being French...

From davidtennant.com:
David had his operation earlier today and we're sure you'll all be pleased to know that all went well. Good news. I wish him a speedy recovery, and I hope he'll take care of himself and won't work too hard...

Good news indeed. Strange, isn't it to care so much about a complete stranger, but I've been thinking about it all day so I'm glad the op went
well.
Thank you for the fervent praying symbol, Clifton! D xx

Nice interview with his understudy, Edward Bennett. He sounds somewhat hyper, as who wouldn't.
