Actually, I don't lose much sleep over it. He's won the thing five times already. The real tragedy is that if he ceases to win I won't be able to
trade him for Clive, Matt and Roof anymore.

"He's won the thing five times already" That's only reason I wanted Nadal to win (and the same reason I wanted Spain to win the football). It's nice to see new winners. |

Plus the knitwear...

The fact that he looks like a 1950s knitting pattern did not determine the target of my support when his opponent looks like a pirate with a permanent wedgie
(! let's see if that's in any of your dictionaries

Oh, how disappointing, it's in wikipedia!

I must admit that I am not into men with wedgies much... |

I think it's just a nervous tic in fact, like whichever tennis player it is or was who constantly fiddled with her bra straps (Mary Pierce I think).
Unfortunate, though.

Ivan Lendl used to pull his eyelashes out during a match. All these years later I can still remember him pulling out an eyelash, looking at it, then flicking
it to the ground. I suppose it will be that way with Nadal and his wedgie, too. What a thought!

Wedgie! Good that it's on wikipedia because when I opened my online-dictionary I only found a very confusing discussion about it. No, we don't have a
term for it. It might not happen with quality German Schiesser underwear, who knows. Nor does anyone ever "give sb. a wedgie". For anyone bilingual
German/English the discussion is absolutely
worth reading.
O! what excuse will my poor beast then find / When swift extremity can seem but slow? / Then should I spur, though mounted on the wind, / In winged speed no motion shall I know |

In French, you simply say that someone have their pants that wedge in between their bum cheeks, but there isn't such a savoury expression as the English
one!! I love it
"I wonder where we go when we die?"
"...Pittsburgh?" "You mean if we're good or if we're bad?". http://ishotlibertyvalance.wordpress.com/ |

I'm really looking forward to Wimbeldon this year. Does anyone know the start date and the date of the final?
I hope Federer wins this year,I felt so sorry for him last year. |

Sorry Bix, didn't see your question. It started yesterday. Do you follow Wimbledon too, Beth and Blue?
I heard Murray described on the radio this morning as "Basically English, with a bit of a funny accent". |

I heard Murray described on the radio this morning as "Basically English, with a bit of a funny accent". (it was a joke). Of course if he loses
early on he'll definitely be Scottish.
Yup, there was an article about that today in Le Monde. They were saying that Murray is very British at the moment, but if everytime he loses, he becomes Scottish again, all of a sudden
'The only difference between lunacy and genius is timing.'

Yup, Jasmine. I went on a bit of a rant on and off this board during the French but now that Nadal is out of Wimbledon I'm relatively calm. (or as Rafa
says, "with calm"
I think folks may have misconstrued what I said about Federer in the French Open thread or I got too excited. I don't actively dislike him. I watched a replay of Wimbledon '08 the other night and he played brilliantly, having been forced by Rafa to use his full arsenal of shots. And he still lost. But he handled himself like a champion at the trophy ceremony and that made all the difference in my reaction to him then and watching it now. I just wish the man would soft peddle the arrogance and sense of entitlement he feels....then maybe when he gets emotional on court it wouldn't rub me and others the wrong way. He's really bought into all the hype about how great he is. I follow tennis avidly all year round on tv and internet and read the interviews so I do know how he communicates. But no doubt he is an immensely talented and elegant player to watch. Here's hoping Murray can take advantage of Rafa being out and give Roger a run for his money. In my opinion, Andy M. is the only player who has the game to win it all and does not collapse mentally when he meets Roger on court. Djokovic is a bit mentally and physically unstable to take it all although I like his game. Edited to add a P.S. Blue, there was a short article written about Miloslav Mecir in the London Times online which talked about his humility and understated way of behaving on court and off. I'll try to find it. I was pleased that someone remembered.

Thanks for looking for the Mecir article, Betuska. I'd like to see it. Didn't he used to be called The Big Cat?
We'll have to agree to disagree about Federer. I think that anyone who has won 14 grand slams has earned the right to think well of himself--at least in his professional life. Love Wimbledon, Jas. Love serve and volley tennis--not that many people play it any more, but Wimbledon brings them out. |
