OK, one episode into this new BBC Elizabeth Gaskell adaptation and I'm hooked. It's a complete delight. Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Francesca Annis, Imelda Staunton, Julia McKenzie, Lisa Dillon and Juliet Sawalha strutting their stuff (with some incidental men around too) - all absolutely fantastic. Not much happens, yet Eileen Atkins's last line (to Jim Carter, who is Imelda Staunton's real-life husband) "Mr ---, you are no longer a neighbour, you are a friend" had me squirming with delight. Great stuff.

And how much episodes to come? I hope you won't miss the last one.

I'm not sure but I shall ask 10 people to record it for me whilst I'm in Berlin so that at least one person is bound to (a) remember and (b) record the right channel at the right time.

I think BBC should take over the world, so we'd get it instead of rubbish French TV.
I've hardly watched TV since I got back home... a documentary on the Russian revolution a week ago, Kubrick's Lolita tonight... but TV shows are awful. Cranford sounds good - I've not read the novel, though I've got it Beauty is truth, truth beauty, - that is all

Quote: Quote: You watched it on arte, didn't you? Me too. I like the mustiness of the Kubrick version. Erotic-wise I much prefer Jeremy-Irons. And, thou away, the very birds are mute:/ Or, if they sing, 'tis with so dull a cheer,/ That leaves look pale, dreading the winter's near.

It's true we both have Arte
I've not watched it yet, my dad's taped it for me because I was baby-sitting until late. I've seen the Jeremy Irons version a while ago, I'll need to see it again as we're studying it in my English film class. I need to read it again too. I've not seen the Kubrick film, but I do love James Mason Beauty is truth, truth beauty, - that is all

Re: Cranford | ||

That is one impressive line-up! I wish I could see it here, but we only have BBC Entertainment which is probably the worst BBC channel ever. Think 5 year old episodes of "The Weakest Link", an endless number of old episodes of "Dalziel And Pascoe" and heavily censored versions of "Extras"

I forgot Leslie Manville and Barbara Flynn who are in Cranford too. Oh, and Michael Gambon, Alex Jennings and Greg Wise. |

Unfortunatelly here we have to wait when all these BBC movies and series come on DVD only. I dont know the material but i can imagine all these fantastic actresses together and it sounds so good. Hopefully they will bring it on DVD, this way i saw "Wives and daughters" and all Poirot series( well, this is from Granada i guess) as well and i loved them so much.

Greg Wise is in this! I have always had a soft spot for him.

Yes. But the men come and go pretty much (apart from Jim Carter and the young guy playing the doctor, can't remember his name) - it's the women's show.

I can still sulk though, can't I!
There's a nice little clip on Amazon with interviews with Judi Dench, Imelda Staunton, Greg Wise, etc. And here's even the link: www.amazon.co.uk/Cranford-Complete-BBC-Judi-Dench/dp/B000Z1TYT2/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1199892566&sr=8-1 |

When was this originally produced? Is it new?

By the looks of Judy Dench and Imelda Staunton, it looks very new. According to imdb, it came out in November 2007.
