I've been away for several weeks and I heard they are closing Guantanamo (heard that before) but is it true that they will be moving the prisoners to a
prison in Washington D.C.?

Everything about this is up in the air. The U.S. Congress has refused to fund the closing ($80 million) until they have a set of concrete plans from the Obama
White House so they can adjust them if they feel the need.
One of the holdout problems is the possibility of moving any or all of these prisoners to U.S. prisons. People act like there are no other high-risk foreign prisoners in our U.S. prisons, yet there are many. The mastermind of the first bombing of the World Trade Center in New York has been in prison for decades, as are many others. This is what I consider a straw man--an argument that is set up only to start an argument, it has no merit. It's partly sour grapes from the Republican party of George W. Bush, that lost so much ground and must now try to pull down the party in power. There are hearings scheduled, and some trials, various legal procedures that are finally moving forward now that Bush and Cheney aren't suppressing it all. People have to decide where to hold those hearings, and how to do it efficiently. This may also have an impact on closing the prison at Guantanamo. As for the base itself, it won't close. It is very important to the U.S. and they're continuing the build up the facility there. You can go into Google Earth and see that it is a very large area on the eastern-most portion of Cuba. I'm quite certain that keeping this base has a lot to do with the U.S. relationship with the nation of Cuba as it does with the strategic position on this part of the Atlantic Ocean. Lily Barthes |
