I wonder if one can rent them for a month to see how one gets on with them.

I landed right one this page when I clicked on the thread and read Jas's last post before I actually read what she was talking about, and I thought she was
talking about renting a man to see how one gets on with him
I would have loved to find an internship in Britain, Jas, but most of them are not paid, as it is not a legal requirement to pay interns (it is in France, over 3 months), and I can't afford staying in the UK for 3 to 4 months if I'm not paid. The best would be to find a short-term contract, but it's not easy from France, and I didn't have much time to really look into it - I'm not sure it's even possible! I was quite happy yesterday because I found out that it's possible to do the last year of my course as an apprentice in a company - it means 3 weeks at Uni at the start of the year, and then you spend the rest of the academic year as a trainee in a company and only go to Uni one day a week. It would be fantastic, it's great experience and it's easier to find work when you graduate if you've done an apprenticeship (can you say that?), and also, you're paid, not much, of course, but enough to pay for a small rent... I was delighted to find out about that, it's brand new!

You can say that.
(Thanks for your text about the rugby btw. I was actually in the cinema watching a sad little film called Wendy and Lucy at the time. But not unhappy to hear the result

Well, didn't follow the second half time much, was more interesting to chat with the people sitting next to us and the barman, rather than seeing the
French team making a fool of themselves!! Must have been a crazy atmosphere at Twickenham though. I was with Anna, we had a good time in spite of the defeat!

Hi Ladies We're having a wonderful weekend here in sunny ole Ireland. So many things on. Cheltenham Races, Six Nations Rugby plus St Patrick's Day Celebrations. Twas badly needed. Far too much doom and gloom with recessions and budgets and crooked crooks. If Ireland win the grand slam next saturday in the rugby final, this country will go absolutely bonkers!!! Last time they won this was 1948 |

Blue - Kindle looks really cool. But for $349, I'd rather get myself a IPOD Touch or even an IPhone. I like the wi-fi aspect of IPOD
Touch & the GPS portion of it. Plus accessing Youtube whenever I want. Wow!
Lib - Great to hear about the new internship! Sorry it's not going to be in the UK but yes, one does have to make a decision to earn money also while slaving away at the new job. Weather tomorrow in Chicago will reach 70 deg F and sunny. But I won't be able to enjoy it since I'll be cooped up in the hospital tomorrow for a outpatient procedure. |

I have a couple of co-workers who have the iPhone and they both think it's great. It looks great, too, but I don't have AT&T, and won't be getting it, so no iPhone for me. There are some good toys for grownups, aren't there? |

Just trying to understand/accept the behavior of a good friend, perhaps one of you can help. Please explain introversion to me...it's tough for me to
grasp. Does it seem normal to have known someone for 35 years and they never once had a party/gathering? Never have been invited to their home even at
Christmas. Turns down my invitations and others' invitations even if she has nothing to do. She has described herself as anti-social, has scored high on
that trait in psychological testing that employers do for certain jobs (and this was thought of as valuable for her position sitting behind a computer).
Isn't this always considered a negative thing that should be changed? Socially speaking of course. I just want to understand this. I don't see this as
a positive trait, certainly not in the realm of friendship. Anyone?

Shammy, we don't entertain much here for two reasons--no money and a messy house.
Over the last year I have been working on it, in my spare time, and some parts of the house do look better. It is a goal to have a party and invite folks from the office over, but I haven't even had the neighbors in much. I'm not there yet. Do you think it could be something like that? I don't go out much because I never have the cash, or because by the time Friday night rolls around I've been running kids all week, have been working, and I enjoy hunkering down, having a glass of wine, turning on a British mystery or a NetFlix film, and just hanging out. What you describe sounds like someone who is a lot more withdrawn. Have you tried a simpler stage than an evening out--maybe a nice lunch at a neutral spot on the weekend? P.S.--beautiful child, Agnes! Lily Barthes |

Just trying to understand/accept the behavior of a good friend, perhaps one of you can help. Please explain introversion to me...it's tough for me to grasp. You know you're introverted when you have to force yourself to go out (even to see good friends), then after you've made the huge effort necessary to get out the door, you enjoy yourself enormously. I don't think think introversion is necessarily negative, although it certainly can be a social disadvantage. (The thought of walking into a room full of strangers gives me palpitations.) People are what they are. Introverts have certain traits and skills just as extroverts do. There was no one moment when I decided to be introverted--I just am, just like I'm right-handed. |
