And their only known predator is the horned owl which I have no idea if it's even living in this area. I do hear owls from time to time right outside my window. I wasn't going to kill the poor little darlings, Eva. I can just let nature take care of things I guess. Or from what I've been reading, I can sprinkle moth balls or cayenne pepper around the steps of my house to discourage skunks (and probably friends, neighbors,relatives) from coming near. We will be lonely but at least we won't smell like skunks. Oh,and I've been researching something else...Jackie is going to be proud of me for all this wildlife talk. Skunks give birth in May after a 66 day gestational period which means that the whole mating thing is possibly happening this week. Whatever female skunks are living in my area...well, I hope they find that "he's just not that into you" and they'll be on their merry way somewhere else that doesn't have mothballs and cayenne pepper.

They fill up the whole area with their lovely stench, and yes, it's at night, and yes, the smell literally wakes me up. It's like I can taste it. I have no idea how to make them go away. On our street, we also have coyotes, bunnies, owls, hawks, falcons, woodpeckers, egrets, pocket gophers, possums, lizards, snakes and geckoes. Oh, and maybe a bobcat, too. It's a veritable Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom here, just half a mile from the motorway. Edited to add: we have squirrels in southern Cal, but they're ground squirrels, so they look and act a little different from regular cute tree squirrels. Wow, that's as strange to me as eating dogs in China. (But who am I to complain? I eat other animals too.) We must be still and still moving / Into another intensity

Posts: 2010 (03/01/09 22:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Ah Shammy....the skunk problem..I have heard about cayenne pepper...you could also call Critter Control..if you have that company where you live...in Florida they are easy to find...they may be able to tell you how to deter the skunks...while I have a variety of critters in my neighborhood and yard...thankfully mostly these are squirrels and hawks and such like Nastia mentioned. A 1/2 away I have seen a red fox, once...the only time I have seen a skunk has been on the side of a busy highway....and, well...not alive...but the stench is prominent for miles.... I actually got on to this thread to get some feedback from forumers, possibly those that live in countries other than the US..but any suggestions are welcome from any one. You all know that Wexygirl is going to be in the US March 18th...we will be in Gv'ille where I live for about 2.5 days. G'ville is not a tourist destination. So I have been thinking of things she would enjoy or would be interesting to her. She and I have discussed a viewing of a authentic suburban MALL....truly...EVA...did you know that Edward Norton's father designed the first such Mall in the US....yep...the facts I have at my fingertips amazes... Anyway, I hope to take her someplace where she may see an alligator in its natural setting but can't guarantee that experience. Uni. of FL is here...a huge campus, fairly attractive...[Chapel Hill is much more so but that is in NC alas].... so my question is, if you were going to visit a small college town in the US....what would interest you to see or experience? We can't go Tubing as that season does not start until May...that would have been great to do. [Tubing is sitting in a huge innertube floating down a river....taking in nature at its best. Thanks for any thoughts on this question.

This is the extent of my knowledge of them: Just back from Glasgow, I had a great week end with 6 of my friends from Uni, but I'm shattered!! Got back home just in time for lunch, and fell asleep right after that, woke up just in time for dinner! It was great to be in Scotland, even for a short time-and I'm going back with my parents in three weeks! Clifton, didn't you realise that we had squirrel for lunch last time you were over? No, I have heard of some strange people eating squirrel but it hasn't yet taken over from roast beef or lamb as the traditional British Sunday lunch. Lib, glad you had a good weekend!

Sorry, no suggestions... (is it far to go have a tour at the filming locations of Red Dragon?) Just a correction tho... it was Edward Norton's GRANDFATHER James Rouse who designed the first Mall. He also founded the Enterprise Foundation and from what I read it does excellent job in developing affordable houses for poorer people and lobbying the Governement. Edward is a member of the Board. EN's father founded the "Grand Canyon Trust". E.xxx "You won't like me when I am... hungry!"

I can't say I would want to do it again--it has a gamy taste, and I don't like that--but there are plenty of people who like them. There's a squirrel-hunting season in KY every year.

I opened all the drapes and sheer curtains as far as they can be opened just so I can gaze at all the winter beauty. I could have slept in today but instead I got up my usual time, plowed my way through the snow to the local supermarket where I was pretty much the only shopper and bought all the ingredients for a perfect supper. I'm making an early St Patty's feast...corned beef, cabbage and boiled potatoes with butter on them of course. For dessert, Jewish Apple Cake. That has nothing at all to do with St Patty, I just like it a lot. The moistest cake I've ever tasted...goes great with a cup of coffee in the morning too. Maybe somewhere there is a Jewish woman making Irish soda bread, who knows? Blue, I can't imagine eating squirrel. I guess because I think of squirrels as being rats with bushy tails. Yep, I think that has something to do with it.

In a few weeks, I'll put out carrots, and in a couple of months I'll have the makings of an excellent salad. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by and we'll have lunch from my garden. Spring is coming at last. The trees are beginning to bud, tulips and daffodils are coming up, crocuses are blooming and soon the forsythia will be blooming, too. The whole world is turning green again.
