I voted "other," because I want him to play another funny villain, as in In Bruges, though I suppose it could be argued that because the situation he creates is so incredibly sad, he's really not that funny, after all. So, let's give him another role as a bad guy who is, without doubt, really funny, like his Wallace and Gromit character, but not just a cartoon.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing him do some more Shakespeare, this time on film, so we could all see...

Oh, I know Vincent was mentally ill and it wasn't helped by the quantities of alcohol he drank, but that's always the central focus on van Gogh movies and exaggerated, instead of showing it was something he tried to overcome, they make it freakish. Makes me angry. Grrr!

Hi Jackie! Thanks again for coming up with these polls,they are great fun....

But I wanted to mention that Van Gogh was mentally ill. Now I am not saying that a film about him has to play that up but a film about him [have never seen Lust for Life] could not leave it out altogether...and I would think that RF would certainly play to that was well...but do so without going overboard.

I do like the idea of RF playing some artist...would also love for him to actually...

"Vincent & Theo" was a little better, but still not dealing with Vincent as a lonely, sensitive man. Still too much with the wackiness. And it almost seemed like Altman wanted to shock the audience with the sexual scenes.
As I said, the definitive movie of van Gogh has not been made. Ralph can fix that. And look good in a beard at the same time.

Not Edward Munch, please! Gloomy Norwegians are even worse than gloomy Danes. The way he looks at women and sexuality is so depressing - there's certainly not much 'lust for life' in Munch

Robert Altman's "Vincent and Theo" is interesting; have you seen it? Tim Roth plays Vincent, Paul Rhys is Theo, they are both very good.

But the Kirk Douglas movie(Lust for Life) was awful! He was too melodramatic & not believable as an artist. I saw him on Letterman years ago talking about it & he said that Vincent "was a weak man", which isn't true at all. Ralph could make the definitive movie about Vincent with less emphasis on the extreme behavior & more on his artistic struggles. He could show the sensitivity of the man like in the Don McLean song(Starry Night), instead of making him a wack job....

Yes, I woudl LOVE to see RF playing artist ! and there are many many artist!
Van Gogh - though it was done by Kirk Douglas already! and I just saw Met Museum Special Exhibition "FRANCIS BACON"and Bacon painted Van Gogh style painting and he painted after saw film!
Bacon's paintings are quite disturbing, least to say, Its powerful, no doubt!
My favorite Artist whom I would LOVE RF to play is Edvard Munch! Norwegian artist, I saw most extensive...

Browning is the good idea, Jackie! I remember watching The Barrets of Wimpole Street when I was a teenager with my gran. Always loved it when she made it out of her dad's house at last to elope with Robert Browning!

Imagine being married to Byron. Lady Byron outlived him though, and remarried, (I hope) happily.

I think RF would be a good Byron. He has a brooding, inward-looking quality that is properly byronic.
